Fitness Regime For New Mums - No Vigorous Workouts After Child Birth

What is the right way to lose post-pregnancy weight?: Fitness experts suggest a slower regimen for mothers as pushing themselves too hard could impact them as well as the babies

It was an unfortunate photograph of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan coming out of a party that sparked off a national debate on celebrities and post-pregnancy weight like never before. If Victoria Beckham and Malaika Arora Khan could get back to shape in less than a couple of months, what was stopping Aishwarya from doing the same? Opinions ranged from bitchy to ridiculous and the topic itself has raised a number of questions. The most important being, just what is the right way to lose post-pregnancy weight?

New mom Aishwarya Embraced her Fuller Figure At Cannes this Year

Dr Kishore Kumar, neonatologist and CEO of Cloud Nine hospitals, is quick to caution. “The basic rule of post-weight pregnancy is it depends largely on genetics – how much weight you gain, how quickly you can lose it of if you will ever lose it. On an average, a woman gains about 10 kilos of weight during pregnancy, which is transient fat or as we know it, post-pregnancy weight. The presence of fat is very important for a new mother because she has to breast-feed. So this whole concept of losing weight in a month’s time is not very ideal in general if you are going on crash diets and vigorous exercise, which was not part of your lifestyle before. I have had a mother who swam till the last day of her pregnancy and went back into the water almost immediately after giving birth. But she had been a swimmer all her life,” he says.

Dr Gautami N, a gynaecologist, says: “Keep your weight constant at least for the first six months after your pregnancy because your body needs to adjust to the change of not having to supply nutrients to a life growing within. Unlike the women in the West, our genetic make-up is different, as is our diet. We need to work around that. If you have had a very active lifestyle before and during your pregnancy, you can go back to exercising after the birth of the baby. Just don’t do strenuous exercises that you have never done before because it will have an adverse effect on your system,” she says.

Fitness experts too recommend a slower regimen for mothers. “It is not vigorous cardios and weights and Pilates that we recommend immediately. New mothers have already gone through delivering a baby, so straining the body further is not recommended. The body needs to heal. For the first three months at least, I would recommend you keep it simple. Do 20 minutes on the treadmill on an even speed. Even if you do weights, keep it very light. Most women also do Kegel (pelvic) exercises after giving birth; you can supplement it with some calming yoga as well. At the end of the day, don’t push your body,” says fitness expert Arab Khan.

A driving reason for women to lose their post-pregnancy weight is largely psychological too. “We live in a visual world today where appearances are paramount. Previously we thought of our mothers as cuddly, warm and round. Today, motherhood is not a good enough reason to be out of shape, even if you have genuine medical reason for it. It does not help when you see a Karishma Kapoor, a mother of two, flaunt her toned body and slim thigh on the silver screen. But the truth is, stretch marks, a sagging bustline and jelly belly is the reality many mothers live with. Accept the fact that our body may not go back to college days. Embrace the truth that not all of us can be Demi Moore. It helps,” says Mamtha Shetty, a city-based psychologist.

But what happens when you push the envelope on the post-pregnancy weight loss? The repercussions are twofold – physiological and psychological. Dr Kishore says: “If you insist on a dramatic weight loss in a very short time, then there is a very diverse effect on your body. It affects the production of breast milk in a woman, which adversely affects the baby’s health. The mother herself increases the risk of osteoporosis,” he says.

“Depression is a very serious risk for a new mother who has to tend to the needs of a newborn baby and you will not be able to enjoy motherhood. We don’t need science to tell us what it does to a baby to be deprived of maternal love in its early days,” says Namrata Gupta, another city-based psychologist.

Look of the Day

-->
Welcome to my very first 'Look of the Day' post!

I had lots of comments on my beautiful outfit the other night (as well as my hair & makeup) & wanted to share with you where I got my outfit from, how much it was & how I did my hair & makeup (as well as what products I used).

-->
FACE

 Firstly - I start with my make-up; I always make sure I tie hair back from my face.

Here I went for a little bit more of a natural bronzy look, eyes not too heavy as you can see. I was wearing this outfit during the day (didn't have time to change before an early dinner with friends) & then went out to dinner. So it's a look that works well for day & night.

As a base, I began with some normal face moisturizer, a little bit of Lucas Paw Paw ointment on my lips & the Napoleon Perdis Auto-Pilot skin primer. I then concealed the small blemishes or redness on my skin with concealer & blended it with a makeup sponge, this gives great coverage. I then used pressed powder (again with a makeup sponge but a different one that I use just for that powder) all over my face & also blended it into my neck (Do this to avoid foundation lines on your face)

I then used a little bit of Mineral Powder over the top for that little bit of extra coverage & long lasting staying power. After that I used bronzer on my forehead, cheeks, over the top of my nose & around my jawline. I then followed to use the Napoleon Perdis Ultimate Contour Palette - I used the brown for just underneath my cheekbones (this helps define them), a tiny amount of pink on the apples of my cheeks & the highlighter just on the top of my cheekbones.

EYE BROWS
I fill them in a little bit with an eyebrow brush with light brown powder to give them that little bit more definition. I then use a clear mascara that I use to control where those crazy things go - My eye brows are out of control & I need them to STAY!

EYES
For this look I decided to go a little more lighter as my hair is up, but I still wanted to define my features. I started with my eyeshadow palette. I used the goldy color just on my lids & used the white/creamy color on my brow bone. I then used the pinky purply color from the palette in the crease & underneath my eye on the bottom of my lower lashes with a small amount of brown in the crease & underneath my eye along my lash line. I used a bigger brush to lightly blend the colors together for a polished, neat look. (This is something you have to get better at over time, don't get frustrated if you cant do it - it takes practice!)

I then used the liquid liner along the tops of my lashes (get as close to the lash line as possible); start from the inner corner then work your way along to the outer corner & end with a small cats eye. (Be sure to let the liner dry before you move your eyes around or continue to do your makeup because it will get EVERYWHERE!

I then lightly lined my inner rim of my eyelid with my Napoleon Perdis black pencil eyeliner. Ive poked myself in the eye with this pencil a few times, so be careful if you are a bit clumsy like I am.

After that, I use my Napoleon Perdis 'Long Black Mascara' on my top & bottom lashes, but I am careful not to let them clump together too much. After I give it a few minutes to dry, I then curl my eye lashes with my eyelash curler; I press down & hold until my lashes are curled & looking beautiful (I usually hold mine down 40-50 seconds each lash)

LIPS
I always do my lips just before I leave the house so they are fresh, looking beautiful & glossy - But don't forget NOT to do them! I've made that mistake in the past, but thankfully I always carry my lip liner & lipgloss with me so I'm not walking around looking like a clown with my lips lined but not filled in with gloss.

To start my lips I use a small bit of Lucas paw paw ointment mixed in with a very tiny amount (and I'm talking tiny, you don't want to overdo it) of concealer on my lips, this helps give them that light pinky color after you apply your gloss. Then I line my lips with Napoleon Perdis lip liner in the 'Pink Slip' color which I very carefully apply on the outer line of my lips & finish the look off with my Napoleon Perdis Luminous Lip Veil 'In the Flesh' color. This is how I achieve my light pink lips without making it look too overdone.

HAIR
This look is so easy, stays tidy & looks polished. It's something I can create in just a few minutes if I'm in a hurry & don't have time to worry about curling or straightening my hair! If "Babe, hurry up we have to leave in 5 minutes, how long will you be?", "Only 5 minutes honey!" (But really when you say 5 mins - you mean 15) sounds familiar, this is a great do if your short of time & have a boyfriend hurrying you along ;-)

First I brush my hair so I have no tangles, I then spray it with my V05 humidity resistant hairspray Extra Hold finish (This stuff is brilliant) & brush it neatly back into a tight ponytail. Once its tied up I slowly & neatly wrap my hair (starting from the base)* around the hair tie in a circle until I reach the end of my hair. Then I pin the ends of my hair into the bun neatly & lightly spray it again with my hairspray! A nice and simple done up look great for most occasions. Also looks great with some killer earrings.

MY OUTFIT
It's getting a little bit chilly in Australia at the moment because we are slowing moving into winter here so, I went with a dressy look while also managing to keep myself warm too.

THIS LOOK

- A white singlet $15.00
- Black leggings $15.00
- Royal blue jacket $44.99  (These jackets come in a huge range of colors and I got this one from Hot Miami Styles - Click on the link or go to www.hotmiamistyles.com)
And my favorite new boots hot off the shelves also from Hot Miami Styles $34.99

-->
I love purchasing from Hot Miami Styles & have been ordering from them for YEARS, gorgeous outfits, reliable service & you would not believe the prices (as you can see above). It's great too if you're living in Australia or somewhere that's consistently cold, (ahem, the U.K) because all of the winter looks are currently also on sale as the US are moving into their summer - So get in quick.

Buying expensive things is fun, but learning to shop for killer priced clothing is something my mum taught me. Sometimes you'll find the nicest things aren't always the most expensive, so don't think you HAVE to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on clothes/makeup/accessories when you really don't have to. It's a great feeling looking beautiful in an outfit that didn't cost you an arm or a leg - And if you spill something on it or ruin it, it's no big deal...

I hope you liked this post, I really enjoyed writing it & letting you in on what products/brands I love to use & wear on a regular basis. Share your looks with me on Facebook or Twitter

PLEASE NOTE; I have not been paid to give a review on any of these products, these are simply clothes/products that have worked well for me for a number of years & I would like to share with you, so you can achieve this look if you want to.

Here's How Arjun Kapoor Lost 50 Kgs in Four Years

Actor Arjun Kapoor says he still feels overweight in his mind. He bares his vulnerabilities in an account of how he lost 50 kilos in four years

When you are touted to be the next big star, the pressure to look good never ebbs. So what if Arjun Kapoor has lost 50 kilos in the past four years. Arjun says, “It’s a thankless profession in that sense.” Sitting in a jeans and a black shirt, you’d never think that this is the same obese industry-kid who hardly ever made any social appearances. Here he is confident, fielding questions with his co-star Parineeti Chopra like he was born to be on camera. The journey to reach here has been long, and treacherous, with booby traps full of food all around. He lets us in on to how he found a way around the ambushes:

Arjun Kapoor After Weight Loss

Arjun Kapoor Befor Weight Loss

The start

Most people think, aaj diet shuru kiya, kal patla bana. You can lose 10 kilos in 30 days if you don’t eat, but you are losing muscle. You can put that weight back on with five days of overeating. I realised early on that it’s not about a short term goal. I had to lose 50 kilos. So I had to make peace with the fact that it’s not going to happen overnight.

Salmanbhai [Khan] inspired me. He is the one who told me that I had acting talent in me, that I should not squander it just because I am this big lard of fat. He doesn’t miss going to the gym regardless of what his timings are. He works out early in the morning without fail. Initially, I used to work out a lot with him, cycle from his house to film city. When you live with a person who is so aware of his body, you get inspired.

I suppose the decision to lose weight happened when I decided to make acting a profession. Ultimately, 50 kilos is just a number. If I lost 40 and I looked as lean, then I’d be happy with it. I still want to lose five more.

When you are so overweight, your body responds to any kind of physical activity. First, your body drops the water. And you drop the weight like this (snaps his fingers). In the first month I lost about 10 to 11 kilos. It was kind of shocking initially.

But then I was so happy that I had lost so much weight that I put on all of that by eating more. I didn’t lose weight consistently. I used to lose five then put on three, then lose some more and eat again. I was always working against myself.

Lifestyle change

Losing weight isn’t only about hitting the gym every day, or keeping a check on your diet. It is a combination of the two. I recognised that I have to make adjustments to my diet and if I ever overeat, I need to work it off in the gym.

You reduce the number of yellows you put in your eggs in the morning. I don’t have zero yolks. Because I think the gelatin makes your hair better. Also, it tastes bloody good. I’m a foodie at the end of the day, so I offset this with a workout.

I think diet is a trial and error process. I live on rice, but it bloats me up immediately, so I’ve replaced it with quinoa, the South American grain. It’s actually pure protein. You can put in more chicken too. Chilla is made of aata and that is also something I use. These are small things that go a long way when you realise how your body reacts to certain foodstuffs.

The bad days

When you start losing weight, it leads to many bad days. When you are sitting in front of the TV and realise that you are looking at these guys with six packs and they are ripped, you really don’t see yourself getting there. You have to keep the will power and fight through. There is only one person you can look at in the gym for inspiration and it’s yourself. Anybody’s reassurance will not matter if you aren’t mentally strong enough.

Gym bean

In the first year, with weights and cardio, I lost a lot of weight. But the fourth year was the toughest. I had to lose only five more kilos. That’s when I wanted to get my jaw line sorted, stomach as plain as possible. That’s where CrossFit came in. I started training under Deepesh Bhatt. When you stabilise yourself with your own core, then you can lift anything in the world.

You activate smaller muscles through CrossFit. I hear Hrithik Roshan does CrossFit in the morning and then does hardcore body building through the day. Now, I haven’t reached that level in the gym.

Eating and cheating

I would be lying if I say I don’t have a diet plan. I have one toast with four to six eggs. One or two yolks depending on how many eggs I’m having. If I train in the morning then I have a protein shake. I have lunch and am still trying to cut down on carbs. At home, I have dal, sabzi, and chicken. I also have either bajra ki roti which is more filling or two phulkas. In the afternoon, depends on where I am and what I’m up to, I nibble on some rubbish or the other. I love food and I like eating. If anyone offers me good food I tend to have some. But I can afford to because I know I am training that much. I tend to avoid meetha generally, but nowadays I realise even that has become difficult because I’m travelling so much.

My dinner is as light as possible — just protein. Because I am a meat lover by nature, it’s easier to follow a protein-based diet. The evening time is the worst time in the day. Between lunch and dinner I am tempted by a million things. I tend to have a lot of black coffee. It keeps you feeling fresher and gives you a false high. I stopped liking milk in my coffee a long time ago.

Self-esteem

You obviously have self-esteem issues when you are fat, but I never let it bog me down. You deal with it internally. Then you hit McDonalds, have three burgers and you are happy again. I used to go to McDonalds, order three burgers, one strawberry milkshake, French fries and pack one burger for on my way home. I was a grumpy kid who hardly ever smiled and just wanted to make films.

Now that I’ve lost weight I am more conscious of my weight than before. If I look at pictures when I was fat, I just smile. But when I see the posters of my film, I think ‘S**t, I have put on weight, I was so thin back then.’ I don’t look at myself in the most positive light. That’s why I hate posing in front of the camera even now.

5 tips to stay active during winter

It’s starting to get colder in the mornings and the darkness outside isn't exactly motivating or inviting you to get out & move for your daily dose of exercise.

But its time for a change & you have made the first step by reading this blog! The only way to live a healthy lifestyle & love the body you're in is to constantly reward it with the exercise & healthy food it deserves.. Even when the colder months pass us by. So we can fully enjoy our amazing healthy bodies in winter too!

So, with that said, I wanted to share my tips that help keep me motivated during the cooler months of the year.

These are my tips to help you stay fit during those cold winter days.

1. The goal doesn't change even though the weather does
During winter, the cold & darkness deceives you & leads you to believe your warm bed is soooo much better than a hot body. But it's not, it's lying to you because your mind will always lean towards pleasure than pain! Don't believe the voices 'excusing' you from your morning workout while you lie in bed with your tired eyes a little bit open thinking "Ill just do my workout tomorrow or this afternoon, I am SO tired this morning - Snooze button on".. I think this is something that sounds extremely familiar to EVERYONE! SO make an effort to practice not making excuses & staying true to YOUR personal goals - Be positive about reaching your health & fitness goals or maintaining what you have achieved already despite the weather change. I love the quote "Use it or LOSE it" - If you don't work it, you sure are going to be sorry when you lose it.

2. Get Moving
We know winter weather makes it more difficult to go out for a walk or run (ask anyone, I am sure they would be more than willing to tell you what they think - But you won't complain because you're excuses free.. Remember ;-) ), but there are so many ways to get your body moving & your heart rate up inside, you can do band workouts, skipping, boxing, workout DVDs, or even find some great YouTube fitness videos. Here's a one of my favourite 'on the go workouts' or a quick jump start that I can do anywhere for a great bum:

The 10 minute BUTT toning workout
for the girl-on-the-go

This workout is something I like to do if I can't get to the gym or I’m away & a hotel room is the only space for a workout or I just want to kick start the day at home for a rockin bum!

Each exercise is 1 minute long – 10 different exercises

What you need;
Yoga mat/or carpet, skipping rope, stopwatch/iphone & your fit girl attitude!

(If you have any trouble trying do this exercise, you can always search it on YouTube for a demo before your workout)

1. Squats for 1 minute;
-       Stand with feet hop distance apart & parallel
-       Bend at knees & stick your bum out behind you
-       Keep back straight & the weight in your heels
-       As you return to standing, squeeze your glutes

2. Front Lunges for 1 minute;

- Inhale, then exhale & allow your abdomen to fall toward your back
- Gaze straight forward knees slightly bent & chin slightly tucked. Keep the back of your head touching the wall
- Bend your knees to slide your back down the wall. Ideally, you will come to a level almost as low as sitting

8. Hip Bridge for  1 minute;
-       Lie on back, hands by sides, knees bent
-       Keep weight in heels, squeeze glutes and push hips up so body is in one line from knees to shoulders
-       Return to starting position and repeat for 1 minute

9. Skipping for  1 minute;
- Grab your skipping rope & GO for 1 minute

10. Push ups for 1 minute;
- Lay on your stomach, legs straight & shoulder length apart
- Push up off the ground & do as many push ups as you can in one minute

Make sure you stretch for 10-15 mins after this workout!

3. Keep yourself warm
Did you know that when you are cold your body craves fatty foods naturally? Your body is trying to protect & insulate itself from the cold - Therefore craving fatty rich foods & storing it as fat to keep you warm. A way to help combat this is to obviously always keep yourself warm (rug up when you are cold, wear socks, drink green tea.. you get the picture) & always be prepared with your meals. Which leads me to tip number 4.

4. Eat & drink WELL
Being prepared with meals is something I do all-year-round routine. This stops you from snacking on foods that your brain will love you for - for about 5 seconds & that your body will hate you for until you work it off! Keep your bod well nourishedwith nutritious, real, whole foods. So start your day off with a healthy, balanced breakfast - Warm organic oats with a little organic honey is so nice in winter & also promotes slow release energy (this stops you from snacking on unhealthy sugary snacks in between meals). Be sure to stay away from the processed foods - alternatively you can snack on a small piece of fruit with some almonds to subside your cravings until you can sit down for a proper healthy meal. Stick to drinking plenty of water (with a slice of lemon if you like it), plenty of green tea & any alkalizing green drinks (wheatgrass, barley grass, freshly squeezed green juices ect)! Stay away from sugary store bought juices & energy drinks - These fry your brain & make you fat!

5.  Work out with a friend!
A way to help keep yourself accountable is to workout with a friend, pick someone who is motivated, positive& has similar goals that will help assist you towards yours. Involvement & encouragement is key; I love to send my friends 'fitspiration' images that I have on my phone that make me motivated to hit the gym on a consistent basis. This also helps them to stay on track with what they are working towards! This really helps in the mornings when you are getting up to go to a work out - You will be less likely to cancel it because you don't want to let your workout partner down!

*6.  Your Vision Board
I know I said 5 tips, but this one is something a little extra I wanted to add on JUST for you!
Create your very own vision board if you don't have one already - This is a canvas you put up somewhere you look every day & it consists of pictures & words that inspire you to achieve your personal goals - Whether it be fitness, health, wealth or career goals.. Make one that is bright, motivating & brings you happiness every time you look at it.

(Below is a picture that I love because it inspires me to always work harder & be every little bit of the person I want to be!)

I hope this helps you push through the chilly winter months with inspiration & helps you have your BEST WINTER BODY YET! The winter doesn't last but your body will if you take care of it! :)

7 Steps Towards A Better YOU

I came across this fantastic article I absolutely loved while going through files I had on my laptop - It goes over 7 steps towards a better you & at the time I got so much out of it. This goes over some very specific little things we constantly need to remind ourselves to do every day & represents such true statements.

I always focus on the notion "better today than I was yesterday". Every day that passes you by, you will always have the opportunity in front of you to make whatever it is you want to happen, but there is no better day than today to start building a better you.

7 STEPS TOWARDS A BETTER YOU

- Written by Talented Ink

1. DON'T LIVE AMONG HYENAS
Hyenas are carnivores and scavengers that can make sounds of "laughter" to alert other clan members of food. What this means to you is that you should be careful of the company you keep. There are those among us who live to tear down the next person, or spread gossip about others, but there's no room for this kind of negativity in a positive life. When you surround yourself with forward thinking and positive people, it's easier for you to get positive result out of your life, but when you surround yourself with backstabbers and gossipers, you will only find yourself being the next victim to get laughed at and since hyenas are also known to be cannibalistic, you can expect to get torn down by negative people who posed as "friends".

2. YOU CAN'T PLANT MANURE AND EXPECT TO GROW ROSES
It is impossible to live in fear and doubt and expect to live the "good life". Everyone should desire the best out of life, but you can't get it if you always expect the worst to happen. On the same token, you can't plant shiny, happy thoughts and then sit around and wait for goodness to come to you. For anyone to create the life that they want, you first have to plant the right seeds. Now for any sort of positive life that you may want, I know that confidence, perseverance, and a desire to learn have to be some of the first seeds that must be "planted" in your cerebral garden. The next step is to tend to these thoughts because there will be times that they'll need to be watered with positivity in the midst of a drought of negativity and naysayers, This is the most important part of transforming your thoughts into reality because our thoughts are only pipe dreams unless we take action on them.

3. HONESTY IS STILL THE BEST POLICY
Liars and cheaters still exist and even prosper among us, but eventually we all come to the realization that we must pay for the life we live. Some may call it karma, but however you look at it, if we live deceptively, deception comes back to us. If we cheat those around us, we will be cheated. If we live a life full of lies, then how would those who know the false image of us react if they only knew the real us? When we are honest with ourselves and with others, we don't have to worry about facades, covering up evidence, or even ponder exactly what story we told to who because everyone knows the same thing...the truth.

4. EVERYBODY'S GOT A LESSON TO TEACH YOU
Our parents are normally our first teachers, but if we are able to use every lesson wisely, every one is a teacher to us and that goes for our kindergarten teacher to the homeless man at the stop light asking for change. The reason is that some people actively teach us things necessary to our benefit or survival while others teach us things we should or shouldn't do simply by the actions that they take. If you want to become wealthy, then follow the actions of a wealthy man. On the same hand, if you want to live righteously, then do the exact opposite of a wrongdoer. Lessons and examples are seen and heard through our everyday lives so the only thing for us to do is learn from them and reap the education.

5. WORK OUT YOUR MIND AS WELL AS YOUR BODY
"If you don't use it, you lose it!". For me, it's that simple because when we don't use our muscles, we suffer from atrophy so it's a safe assumption that mental atrophy is possible. When we "work out" our minds, we present it with new challenges and new ways of doing things. We seek out ways to break free of comfort zones and we become mentally tougher and stronger from the exercises of creativity and imagination.

6. LOOK STRAIGHT AHEAD, BUT LOOK AT YOUR FEET EVERY SO OFTEN
The only way we can take aim at a goal is by putting our focus on it, but if we don't take notice of our surroundings, we run the risk of letting outside influences distract us. There are those of us who constantly look behind them and watch the mistakes of their past only to either lose sight of their desires or to run into another mistake because they were paying attention to the wrong direction. For those of us who are intent on focusing on the present, we pay so much attention to the here and now that we forget the signs that foretell of a mistake that we've already made in the past, or we ignore the future so much that we end up not planning for it and the future becomes a problem in itself. Now for those who keep their plans in sight and work furiously towards them with reckless abandon can find themselves tripped up by present problems that went unnoticed. When we focus on the future, but take a look around at our present, we not only keep our plans on our minds, but we can also avoid the telltale signs of past distress and we can move around or move through present distractions and roadblocks.

7. MANAGE THE LITTLE YOU HAVE NOW TO BE READY FOR MORE LATER
This is one of the hardest steps for many to follow because it involves the most determination and the most sacrifice. As stated before, we want what we want NOW, but at times we end up living above our physical, emotional, or financial means and end up driving ourselves even deeper into debt. When we take diet pills, we run the risk of becoming dependent on the pill, slower metabolisms, or more weight gain once we stop taking the pills which all spell physical bankruptcy since we not only didn't get close to our physical goals, but we regressed. Chances are you're not where you want to be in life, but that doesn't mean that you should take for granted what you have now because if you are ungrateful for the things you have now, having more will only make you more dissatisfied. Plus, if we manage what we have now and appreciate the little that we have now, then we will learn how to properly plan for more and we will have a deeper respect for the blessings that we get.

I hope you enjoyed this post, I really loved it & wanted to share it with you guys because it was so helpful & gave me that little bit of extra clarity.
